Hello and welcome to another pregnancy recap! I shared my First Trimester recap last week and I guess I’m on a roll because today I’m bringing you my second trimester recap. Read below to find out how this little boy is already giving us a run for our money.
Weeks: I went to the doctor for a normal checkup. Everything looked good, so Chris and I decided to announce the pregnancy on social media.
Weeks: This was the week of Christmas! My nausea was mostly gone and I was able to celebrate a great holiday with the girls and a small group of family. Meredith and Natalie had such a fun day and we loved celebrating Christmas with them! Chris and I also finalized baby boy’s name this week! We aren’t announcing it publicly until he’s born so you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to find out what we name we chose.
Weeks: This was the week of New Years! We stayed home and didn’t do anything crazy, but we were happy to ring in 2021. This is also the week our whole family got COVID. I am happy to report that we are all completely recovered and feeling well.
Weeks: Business as usual, not much to report.
Weeks: My nausea came back this week and I started vomiting again. I also had a doctor’s appointment this week that included my anatomy scan. During my anatomy scan, baby boy looked good but his fluid was borderline low. So my doctor wanted me to come back 2 weeks later for a checkup.
Weeks: I felt baby’s first kicks this week! I have an anterior placenta again (I also had one with the girls) so it took awhile for me to feel him kick. But the cool thing is Chris was able to feel him kick this week too so we both felt him at the same time.
Weeks: I had another checkup with my doctor to see how baby boy’s fluid was looking. Thankfully his fluid looked good but unfortunately his growth had started to look concerning. In two weeks he had not grown much, which was a red flag. We got referred to an MFM, which is a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist. I was happy to be referred to the same MFM I saw when I was pregnant with the girls, so I already knew her and loved her. She saw me that same week and did another ultrasound and said it was wait and watch for now. The possibility of birth defects or abnormalities was brought up, but it was too early to know exactly what we were dealing with. She wanted to see us back in 3 weeks, measure baby boy again, and said we should have more information then. We also got referred to a fetal cardiologist. It was a rough week with a lot of information to absorb.
Weeks: I mostly tried to distract myself this week and stay positive.
Weeks: This was the week of Snowpocalypse in Texas. It was a totally crazy week! We got inches and inches of snow, which Texas homes are not built for. It was a little touch and go for a bit with our water and power situation, but we got very lucky and came out of the crazy weather ok! The girls got to experience their first snow which was really fun to see. We also took them sledding for the first time!
Weeks: I had my second MFM appointment this week and baby boy was measured again. He was still measuring small but he had grown 3 weeks worth in 3 weeks, which is proportional growth and that was positive. There is still no obvious reason for his size and he is still measuring 2-3 weeks behind, so we continue to wait and watch. I saw my OB this week as well. He agreed that we wait and watch and says my MFM will make the call on when we deliver. He does not think I will make it to 39 weeks as planned and thinks 37/38 weeks with some NICU time is more realistic. He said there will probably come a point where baby is better out than in, and they will deliver him.
Weeks: We finally started working on baby boy’s room and Chris and Justin painted his room this week. I saw my OB for a routine checkup and everything looked good.
Weeks: My fetal cardiologist appointment was this week. They did a very long and very detailed ultrasound and thankfully baby boy’s heart looks normal and there are no concerns. My MFM appointment this week went well too. Baby boy’s fluid and dopplers look good and we could even see that he was practicing breathing.
Weeks: I had another MFM appointment this week. I am being seen by my MFM every week and measured every 3 weeks. This was a growth scan appointment and baby boy was measuring at 1 pound, 15 ounces and in the 3.3% percentile. So he is still small, but he is above 3% which is an improvement. My MFM said that if he continues to measure below 5% she will want him delivered around 37 weeks and if he gets above 5% we can deliver at 39 weeks. So time will tell if he is going to be a May baby or a June baby!
Weeks: Once again, I saw my OB and my MFM this week. Since I was 28 weeks, it was time for the dreaded glucose test, which I thankfully passed! Since I am officially in the third trimester, my OB scheduled my c-section date. I am opting for a repeat c-section, which I know is a hot topic, but this is what’s best for me and baby and I feel confident in that decision. We still don’t know exactly when baby will arrive, but he has a tentative birthday which is exciting!
My appointment with my MFM went well too. Baby has plenty of fluid, his dopplers and blood flow look good, and he was practicing breathing.
And that’s it for the second trimester of this pregnancy! The second trimester flew by honestly and it’s hitting me that baby is going to be here before we know it! He is continuing to give us a run for our money and we’ll see how many more weeks we have before he’s born. Stay tuned for my third trimester recap coming soon!
