Hello! Happy Friday!
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it on my blog, but I am an avid reader. I absolutely love reading! My favorite genres are non-fiction and historical fiction. Two years ago I read an amazing book called Memory Making Mom“>HERE) and it really inspired me to create more traditions with my kids. One of the suggestions the author makes is to have a special family dinner once a week where you cook something a little out of the ordinary. At the time, my twins were almost 3 and my son wasn’t even 1 yet, and a special family dinner didn’t feel feasible, so I decided to do family breakfast instead. That felt more doable to me at the time and I was shocked when my kids jumped on board right away! I wasn’t sure if they would be into it, but they all love family breakfast and it has become a really sweet once-a-week tradition that we all look forward to.
So, I thought today I would share a meal plan with some of the family breakfasts I’ve made recently. I hope you will try this tradition in your own families!
Sourdough Dutch Baby
We love dutch babies around here! If you haven’t heard of them, it’s basically a big fluffy pancake you bake in butter in a cast iron pan (if you have one). There are so many varieties and you can pretty much use whatever toppings your heart desires. This week I made a Sourdough Dutch Baby and we all loved it. It was bigger and thicker than other versions I’ve made, which was a fun surprise!
Can you see the butter? That’s what makes this breakfast so delicious.
If you don’t have a sourdough starter, that’s ok! I have made many different dutch babies for breakfast over the years that did not require a sourdough starter. Stay tuned for my next family breakfast meal plan, because I will share another dutch baby recipe our family likes!
Breakfast Burrito Casserole
My husband is a huge fan of breakfast burritos and has been known to pick them up on his way to work even when he’s already eaten breakfast. When I stumbled across this recipe for a Breakfast Burrito Casserole it immediately caught my attention since I know he loves them so much. The recipe requires only a handful of ingredients and is very straightforward. I even made it easier on myself by prepping a few things the night before. I browned the sausage and combined the cream cheese, then put them in the fridge overnight. The next morning all I had to do was scramble the eggs, assemble the casserole, and bake it! It was delicious and we all loved it, especially my husband. I definitely recommend trying this recipe!
Breakfast Pigs in a Blanket
If you’re looking for a quick, simple, crowd-pleasing breakfast, this is the one for you. I was inspired by THIS recipe I found for Breakfast Pigs in a Blanket, but I tweaked it a little bit, because I’m not a huge fan of powdered sugar glazes. They can be a bit too sweet for me, so I decided to make my own glaze using equal parts maple syrup and cinnamon roll icing (the kind that comes with the prepared cinnamon rolls). It added just the right amount of sweetness to the pigs in a blanket. I would highly recommend making these for your next family breakfast. My kids loved them!
Lemon Ricotta Pancakes
I had some ricotta leftover a few weeks ago and since I hate wasting food, I browsed Pinterest for ideas on how to use it. Enter this Lemon Ricotta Pancake recipe! It caught my eye because it was a breakfast item and most of the ideas I saw were dinner recipes. These pancakes were so light and fluffy and the whole family really enjoyed them. The lemon zest and juice gave them a nice bright flavor too, which felt perfect for Spring. If you are looking for a new take on classic pancakes, these were easy and delicious!
Crescent Roll Breakfast Casserole
This Crescent Roll Breakfast Casserole was really good! I try to mix things up and do sweet breakfasts some weeks and savory breakfasts other weeks. This recipe was a great savory breakfast! You only need a handful of ingredients and it’s very easy to prep in the morning, then throw into the oven. My family is full of ham lovers, so that’s another reason this casserole was a big hit for us. I left out the jalapeno, but otherwise I followed the recipe as written. Definitely give this one a try!
Family breakfast has become such a special tradition in our family and we all look forward to it every week! I encourage you to start your own family breakfast tradition if you haven’t already and I hope the recipes I’ve shared will inspire you.
