Hello and welcome back to my IVF Round 2 series! Today’s post is all about our frozen embryo transfer, which is probably the most exciting part about IVF. Months of preparation have gone into that day and you finally get to get pregnant! Or that’s the hope, at least. If you missed my previous two posts, you can read them HERE and HERE.
September 23, 2020 was TRANSFER DAY! That day was so surreal. I didn’t have time that morning to really think about what a big day it was because I have two toddlers that require my attention. My transfer was scheduled for 10:45 and I was told to arrive at 10:15 with a full bladder.
I went about the morning as normal. Woke up, got the girls up, we all had breakfast. I had to leave around 9:30 and I gave the girls and Chris a hug and kiss goodbye. The drive to the fertility doctor was when I really had time to think about what a big day it was. It was bittersweet because it was such an exciting day, but I was sad Chris couldn’t come with me due to COVID-19 restrictions. He hadn’t been able to go to any appointments with me and our transfer was no different. It felt weird going alone but I knew Chris and the girls were with me in spirit. I was excited and anxious and nervous. Even though I had done it before, I still felt all of the same emotions as last time.
I got to the fertility office around 10:15 with a full bladder, as required. My nurse that day was amazing and exactly the calm presence I needed. She has twin girls (via IVF) and another daughter 2 years younger than the twins. She was so excited for us that we have twins and are trying for baby #3 and she gave me so much reassurance that a close age gap was going to be great! Talking to her almost brought tears to my eyes and everything she said to me was exactly what I needed to hear that day. She also brought me the picture of our beautiful embryo that had thawed perfectly.
I have to say, this transfer felt SO incredibly fast. I was walked back to the procedure room, put into “position”, and they confirmed my bladder was full enough. The nurse called for the embryologist and my doctor, who came in within minutes. I was allowed to FaceTime Chris so he could be “there” for the transfer which was nice. Our doctor loved seeing the girls on FaceTime and he said “we go way back” which is so cool to think about, because two years ago he was transferring their embryo! Within seconds, my doctor had the catheter in place in my uterus and the embryologist brought our embryo into the room! He confirmed my name and birth date, then my doctor inserted the embryo into my uterus via the catheter and that was that! Just to give you an idea of how quick it was: my FaceTime call with Chris lasted 2 minutes. TWO MINUTES! And our transfer was over. It was so bizarre. After that I went and laid down in the prep room for about 30 minutes, then I got to use the bathroom, and drive home.
Next the dreaded “two week wait” began. It’s not actually two weeks, it’s 9 days in the IVF world, but it is an incredibly long 9 days let me tell you. Stay tuned because I’ll share in my next post the results of our embryo transfer! Do you think I waited until my blood pregnancy test on October 2nd or did I “cheat” and test early at home?
