Happy Thursday!
We are 4 days into the new year and I have to say I think 2018 is off to a great start for us. I attribute a lot of that to the fact that Chris and I ate black eyed peas on New Years Day.
It’s Southern tradition, especially in Texas, to eat black eyed peas on the first day of the new year and this will supposedly bring you good luck. I grew up with this tradition and it didn’t occur to me that not everyone had heard about it until I met Chris. He had never heard of this tradition and thought it was… unusual. But he’s gone along with it for the past several years like the amazing man that he is.
Last year I totally forgot to make black eyed peas and I’ve decided that’s what went wrong with 2017. Not that we had a horrible year, but it sure had its challenges. Going into this new year, I decided we would not be making that mistake again and I made a big batch of black eyed peas on January 1, 2018. I’m a little late in sharing this recipe, but as long as you eat black eyed peas the first week of the new year, you should still have good luck right? Yes, lets go with that.
I used my mom’s recipe but tweaked it slightly. She usually makes them on the stove top but I decided to try and make them in the crockpot. Y’all know how I love my crockpot recipes. I think they turned out great! If you want an easy and tasty black eyed pea recipe for the new year, give this one a try!
(Sorry I didn’t take more pictures, I didn’t even think about it until they were already in the crockpot. Whoops!)
Crockpot Black Eyed Peas
Ingredients
- 1 lb Black Eyed Peas
- Water
- 3-15 oz cans of unsalted/low sodium chicken broth
- 1 Onion, chopped
- 1 Jalapeno, seeded and diced
- 1 Ham Hock
- Pepper
Preparation
- First things first, put the black eyed peas in a bowl and cover them with water (about 2 inches). Let them sit overnight.
- The following morning, drain and rinse the black eyed peas. They should have increased in size overnight.
- Combine the black eyed peas, chicken broth, chopped onion, jalapeno, ham hock, and pepper in the crockpot.
- Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours
I like to serve these with fresh cracked salt and pepper on the top.

I love your recipe. And honestly I never even thought about making black eyed peas in the crock pot. They look absolutely delicious.

Thank you! The crockpot method definitely gives more flexibility I think. You can set it and forget it!

We did this when we lived in North Carolina. I left the ham hock out as we do not eat pork, and used a veggie bouillon. Love them! My German husband had never heard of the tradition.

That’s a great idea! I will have to try that next time!
